Remote Monitoring
Monitoring remote computers and networks
As we have already mentioned, CommTraffic includes an invisible service application as well as the visible interface application (or console). They exchange data using a local TCP connection. Does this mean that CommTraffic Service and CommTraffic Console can be installed separately on different computers? Yes, that's correct, and network administrators are those who may particularly benefit from that. Just imagine: You connect your home-based CommTraffic Console to the office-based CommTraffic Service while sitting comfortably at home, drinking a Martini, while remaining fully aware of the status of the office network. But don't quote us on that :-)
When you install CommTraffic you have the option of installing CommTraffic Console only, CommTraffic Service only, or both:

This allows you to install the service and console on two different computers, as in the scenario described above. To connect to the remote service, click Service => Connect, enter the IP address of the computer on which CommTraffic Service is running, specify the port number, and, finally, enter the passphrase if needed (setting the passphrase for the service will be discussed below):

Working with a remote service is in no way different from working with a local one; you have exactly the same features available.
To change the port on which CommTraffic Service is listening for connections, click Service => Service Options and select Set New Port. This will temporarily break the current connection to the service, but it will be automatically restored in a few seconds. Changing the default port number may be useful if the default port number is being used by another application. To avoid unauthorized access to the service, you can set a passphrase by clicking Service => Service Options and selecting Set New Passphrase.
If you need to connect to a number of different computers running CommTraffic Service, you can use the Address Book instead of manually entering the information required to connect to the service. To open the address book, click Service => Address Book.

You can create any number of entries in the book and subsequently connect to CommTraffic Service running on a remote computer by selecting the corresponding entry in the Connect window.
